FAQS

Often this is caused by an issue with the memory card.

Ensuring that your memory card is compatible, properly formatted, and in good working order can help to resolve recording issues such as freezing.

The SD Association's Formatter 4.0 is an effective tool for getting the most out of your memory card, and regularly formatting the card in the Ghost-S settings menu is recommended.

You'll need a Class 10 memory card up to 64GB - we recommend the Sandisk Ultra range.

If you're experiencing persistent freezing please test a spare SD card to ensure that yours isn't the root cause.

Please also ensure you are running the latest firmware.

If you're having difficulty powering your Ghost-S on, please carry out the following steps to try to determine the cause of the problem:

  • Remove your memory card, and try to power the camera on.
  • Charge your camera using a mains adapter - some laptop USB ports do not have the required output to charge the Ghost-S battery to its full capacity. You can plug the included USB cable into any USB mains adapter with an output up to 5v/2A.If you can power your camera on whilst connected to this power supply but not when the power supply is removed, there may be a problem with your Ghost-S battery.
  • Test a spare USB cable to ensure that yours isn't damaged our faulty.
  • Update your camera firmware to the latest version
  • Check for any damage to your Ghost-S USB port. This isn't something you should expect, providing the camera hasn't been subjected to misuse or impact.

In your Ghost-S settings menu:
Scroll down to the 'Remote Control' option, and ensure that it is enabled.
Scroll to the 'Remote Pairing' setting and select the option 'One-to-One'.
The camera LCD will show 'Please click rec on your remote'; press the top Drift logo button on your remote, which will pair your remote to the camera. You should see the message 'successful' displayed on your Ghost-S LCD screen. Please note that you may have to press the record button on your remote more than once for the pairing to register.

With the standard rear battery hatch attached securely the HD Ghost and Ghost-S cameras (not Stealth 2) are designed to have a water tight seal resistant to 3m submersion for up to 30 minutes. The universal clip should be used as a key for the rear hatch to achieve a secure fit, as outlined on page 3 of the Ghost-S user manual. Please note that for all applications where the camera may be subjected to water impact (eg. surfing, kayaking),the Drift waterproof case should be used.

This is in fact normal and a feature that cannot be switched off. The Ghost-S has been designed to work efficiently alongside the iOS and Android Drift App, producing two video or photo files of the same recording - a high and low (thm) resolution.

The higher resolution file is designed to be played back or edited on your computer, while the .THM file is designed to work with your mobile device.

Please make sure you have downloaded the 'Drift Life' app as our 'Drift Connect' app is only compatible with the STEALTH 2. Before launching the Drift App make sure all other apps on your phone are closed down. The wireless connectivity range is up to 90m with a clear line of sight, and within this you shouldn't expect to experience any stability troubles. Please note the WiFi and the RC1-1 function should not be used at the same time.

'Rolling shutter' or 'Jelly' effect is usually due to the way that the camera is mounted. If the camera is mounted to a vibrating piece of bodywork or mount, you are likely to see a wobble in your video. Usually having the camera as close to the surface of the bodywork as possible will reduce this. Adding a rubber shim between a clamp mount (eg. handlebar mount) and the mounting surface can help to lessen vibration. Please also try relocating your camera to an area where there is less vibration for improved image quality.

If you're taking your first steps in video editing, iMovie (iOS) or Sony MoviEZ (Windows), will be good options. Both are fairly simple to use, don't require you to convert your files, and are either free or very affordable.

Windows Movie Maker is another free option, but unfortunately requires you to convert your files to a different format, such as .wmv. Quicktime Pro is the next step, and although it isn't free, it's very affordable. Some users love this software, whilst others don't get on with it so well, so it's worth downloading the free trial before parting with any cash.

Sony Vegas Pro (Windows), and Final Cut Pro (iOS) Adobe Premiere Pro (Windows) are great options at the more professional end of the spectrum. These are fairly expensive, and are most suitable for users with a reasonable level of editing experience.

This hands off mode setting is ideal for insurance and security purposes.

In Car DVR Mode the Ghost-S will record continuously, eliminating the need to stop and free up space on your memory card. When your storage is full, the camera will loop back to the beginning of your memory card, and start to record over the oldest footage first. The footage will be broken down into an interval of your choice - 1 min, 3 min, 5 min, or 10 min. Powering the camera off (or cutting the USB power in 'Auto Car DVR Mode') will prevent the camera from overwriting recent footage, ensuring that the important moment is captured.

To enable Car DVR Mode, navigate to the Ghost-S video settings menu and select 'Auto' or 'M' (manual) car DVR mode. Auto mode is designed for use while connected to a USB power supply - The camera will turn on and begin recording automatically when it detects power, and will turn off when power stops. Manual mode requires the user to power the camera on, and start recording manually.

A car icon on the live preview screen indicates that Car DVR mode is enabled.

Please note that Auto Car DVR Mode will need to be turned off in order to charge the camera.

The Ghost-S requires a Class 10/UHS -1 memory card, up to 64GB in capacity. We recommend the Sandisk Ultra brand as these are known to be very reliable memory cards. Samsung and UHS-3 versions of memory cards do sometimes cause issues and should be avoided.

A faulty, corrupt or incompatible memory card is likely to cause recording issues, or prevent the Ghost-S from powering on.

Compatible USB chargers should have an output of 5V (Volts) and 1-2 A (Amps). The camera can be charged using the charging lead provided, or the battery can be charged using the Drift Cradle Charger

! Please note using chargers that do not meet this requirement can potentially damage your camera.

To achieve the best possible image quality, set your camera to 1080p, 30fps, 160 FOV with zero zoom. Ideal conditions are outdoors in natural light, and when filming indoors or at night make sure you set the camera to the 'low-light' scene mode in the Video Settings menu.

Please note that selecting a 127 or 90 degree field of view in the video settings menu will cause a slight decrease in image quality. This will digitally crop the image, resulting in a slight drop in resolution. The zoom feature will have a similar effect - this is a digital zoom and so unlike an optical zoom the further you zoom in the more grain you'll experience.

The best option to prevent wind noise is to use the DRIFT external microphone.

This microphone can be placed out of the wind, and enables the user to target a desired sound source more acurately.

For example, the mic can be placed inside a motorcycle helmet. This eliminates direct contact with the wind, reducing wind noise, and enabling the user to target their voice for applications such as motovlogging.

After 29 minutes of video recording, the Ghost-S will close the file in progress, and automatically open a new one - you won't have to start the recording again manually. This is a result of the file size limitations on MicroSD cards. A uniform 29 minute file duration means that the break in your video will be consistent and predictable, rather than changing each time you alter your settings. It is not possible to change the maximum video duration.

Please note that when the High Bitrate setting is selected, the maximum video duration will be 22 minutes.

The Ghost-S features anti-fog material, and if this becomes saturated condensation can occur inside the body of the camera. The moisture may be allowed to enter the camera if the rear hatch is removed in damp, or very cold conditions.

The solution is to remove your battery and open the battery hatch, and store the camera in a warm dry place overnight. This will allow the camera and anti-fog material to dry out properly.

Providing the waterproof battery hatch is installed correctly and tightened securely then continued condensation should not be an issue nor affect the waterproof rating of your camera.

To prevent condensation from occuring, avoid removing the battery hatch in rain, snow, cold or damp condtions.
