Valparaiso Cerroa Abajo 2012

Some of the world’s best downhill mountain bike riders came together in Valparaíso to compete in the tenth edition of the Valparaíso Cerro Abajo. The downhill race is renowned as one of the craziest in the world and attracts thousands of spectators, who lined the length of the course.  While most mountain bike courses stick to dirt trails in areas outside the city, the Valparaíso Cerro Abajo is among a growing number of urban downhill races, where the riders have to weave their way through the streets. In addition to pre-existing structures such as staircases, roads and footpaths, extra jumps are added in to the course to make things more exciting, both for competitors and spectators.

Cedric Garcia and Filip Polc taking a break with thier Drift HD's

One of the biggest jumps was placed just after Plaza Bismarck, with some riders passing over the gap with no fear, while the jump became the end of the race for some other riders. While it was Slovakian Filip Polc who won both the 2010 and 2011 editions, this year it was time for a Chilean to step up to the top of the podium. It was Mauricio Acuña who led the way, while Polc was not too far behind, finishing in second place. The Chilean rider made it through the course in just 2 minutes and 38 seconds, with Polc just .31 of a second slower. The best female rider was Brazil’s Luana Oliveira, who completed the course in 3 minutes and 21 seconds.

Not so far from the finish line, riders were faced with a wallride between two ramps. The gap between the two ramps was too much for some of the riders. Below is a video of one rider who didn’t quite make it all the way. Aside from negotiating the obstacles, riders also had to watch out for dogs, cars and pedestrians. Known by many in mountain bike circles as “the craziest race in the world”, the event attracted 60 riders, not only from Chile and Latin America, but also from the rest of the world.

Drift was lucky enough to have the top 4 riders wearing Drift HD cameras and they captured some awesome footage, check out the Southtime edit below for an exciting recap of the whole event.

Descida Das Escadas de Santos Downhill MTB 2012

While most riders North of the equator have hung up their wheels for the season, some of the worlds best travel throughout the Southern Hemisphere in search of mountain biking’s version of the ‘endless summer’. Heavy hitters Greg Minnaar, Cedric Gracia, and urban champion Filip Polc arrived in Brazil’s port city of Santos to take on some of South America’s fastest in the 10th Anniversary of the Descida Das Escadas de Santos, which translates to “Descent of the Stairs of Santos”.

Saturday saw the entrants fight it out for their place in the final, only the top 10 men and top 5 women would make it to the final round on Sunday.  The riders have all day on Saturday to run the course and clock up the quickest time they can; with this track being particularly mean preparation is everything including suspensions for big hits, the right tire pressure and with many riders chose to trim the handles as parts of  the track were incredibly narrow it  was difficult to have  handles more than 760 mm.

By the end of the day the top 10 of the mens was closely matched, all riders being within 1.5 seconds of each other. Marcelo Gutierrez was top of the pack at the end of Saturday, and he was looking to win, especially after his defeat in the city of Manila a few weeks ago. The favorite and defending champion of  Santos in 2010 Filip Polc, remained in second place. Greg Minnar closed out the group making the top ten with a time of of 1: 01: 857.

Sunday and the final, which was to be broadcast in front of more than 80 million viewers and watched by 4,000 spectators who lined the track anticiapting a closely fought final, and they weren’t to be disappointed. One by one the riders went down in reverse order from their rankings gained on the Saturday, the local Dijoni Fornari snook in to take 5 th place, with Emanuel Pombo securing 4th. Gutierrez was looking to take the title on Saturday, but an unfortunate flat left him out of the running on the Sunday, opening up the field for Filip Polc; after a crash in last year’s semi-finals, Filip was pushing hard to redeem himself. Polc was on the limit on Sunday and it paid off. Literally and figuratively crowned king of the hill.

Result from finals Descida das Escadas de Santos 2012:
1 – Filip Polc (ESL) – 0:58.207
2 – Walace Miranda (BRA) – 1:00.554
3 – Cedric Gracia (FRA) – 1:00.859
4 – Emanuel Pombo (POR) – 1:01.352
5 – Djone Fornari (BRA) – DNF

Sponsored Athlete Interview: Olie Burton

Oliver Burton Downhill MTB Rider

Olie Burton PRO Downhill MTB Rider

We recently caught up with Oliver Burton, pro Downhill Mountain Biker, and one of our Drift sponsored athletes to find out how his season has been, and the thrills and spills of the 2011 World Cups. Olie has been mountain biking since he was 16, and now at 21 has been competing professionally for the last 3 years. 2010 was his first entrance on the international stage, gaining a respectable 62nd in the world cups rankings, and 4th in the UK championships. So 2011 promised to be an exciting year, here we talk to Olie about the highs, lows, and his hopes for 2012.

Drift Innovation: This has been your second year on the World Cups circuit, are you pleased with this year’s results?

Olie Burton: This year has not really gone how I had hoped. Coming into the season I spent the first three months of the year on the couch injured so missed a key part of my training. I did have some good results during the year but my main goals were  better finishes at World Cups and so I felt that I didn’t perform as well as  I wanted to.

DI: What has been your highlight of 2011?

OB: I think I would have to say winning the Pearce Series overall. It is held in Shropshire and Wales. Not the most well-known series but I had to beat some top elites and be consistent throughout to get the title.

DI: You’ve gotten some great videos from your Drift camera, how do they help you as an athlete?

OB: Thanks. I use my Drift all the time during training and racing, When I’m racing its really helpful to be able to watch back your practice runs and compare lines and to see where I might be losing time on the track and where I can gain time too. It makes training fun because when the camera comes out everyone tries to go as fast as possible to look good on camera.

DI: How has being part of a team this year been? Has it given you the boost to going Pro full time?

OB: It’s been great. Being part of a team especially one sponsored by a major car company like Abarth has opened up lots of possibilities including being part of different media opportunities. It also makes things easier when it comes to organizing things pre-season. It has, for sure, made me realise what support I could have as full time pro and where I can be if I work hard.

DI: Tell us about your current bike set-up?

OB: I currently don’t have a downhill bike as I had to return last season’s bike so I guess my main bike at the moment is my xc bike. Its current set-up is very muddy as I have just got back from a local ride with good friends Joe and Matt from Team CRC. I try and run it as much like a downhill bike as possible. Short stem and the same with bars like on my DH bike. I have fitted a slightly longer fork to make it a bit slacker as well.

DI: The current season has just come to an end, any plans to relax or are you training hard for next year already?

OB: The teams schedule this year saw me participating in lots of different events. This meant that I didn’t do a full national series making my last race about a month earlier than everyone else.  I spent a couple of weeks chilling and doing some wakeboarding in Italy with my sister who is as enthusiastic about wakeboarding as I am about downhill (addicted in other words!)  But I’m now in full training and its going well. I have been mainly working on my base fitness and have just started doing more interval work as well.

DI: Away from MTB what do you like to get up to?

OB: I ride allot of motocross for training but away from anything two wheeled I’m I really into skiing and enjoy wakeboarding when I can.

DI: What advice would you give to anyone thinking of getting into MTB at a professional level?

OB: Anything’s possible, and if you believe in yourself and work hard you will make it.

DI: What is your schedule for 2012 looking like? Anything you’re particularly looking forward too?

OB: My schedule so far is only filled with races but I really want to get to some of the more unique events next year like Crankworks. I have never been to Wistler before but its looks amazing. I really want to do allot more video work next year so I’m hoping that comes together.

DI: Lastly, what are you hoping Father Christmas brings you this year?

OB: As usual, I have a pretty big list of bits and bobs I would like but I’m not sure if I’m getting a bit too old for Father Christmas? I am also told that the recession has hit Father Christmas too but I’m not sure if I believe that, I guess we will see on Christmas morning.

North Shore Overlord MTB Race

mtb race bcLaunch Helmet Cams and Drift joined forces recently to sponsor the inaugural North Shore Overlord GPS mountain bike race. The event was a huge success and talking to organizer Jeff Linton it sounds like it is the beginning of much bigger things. The North Shore Overlord saw teams of 2 and 4 racing to see who could cover the most ground in 6 hours on the infamous Mt Fromme on the North Shore of Vancouver, BC. Teams were only allowed to ride a trail once and were constantly monitored using Flaik GPS tracking. Mountain biking legend and all round madman Brett Tippie was onsite to commentate the race and keep the fans entertained. We set up a number of racers and course marshals with Drift HD170 Stealth cameras and used the footage to put together a short edit. Watch out for the “cheeky” shot of Team Squamish!

Congratulations go to the team West Coast combination of Ray Lachance and Rod Daneau who took the overall win with close to 50km each. Apart from having a superb level of fitness, these guys rode two of the true double black diamond trails on the mountain, Lower Crippler, and Digger. Team West Coast took home a brand new Drift HD170 Stealth along with other swag for their efforts. Well done guys!
