im trying to update the firmware on the drift hd but its a .dat file and when i drag/drop it into the camera and click the checkmark for the firmware update, nothing happens.
Hi Steve – you need to add the file to your SD card then insert this in to the camera and select the firmware update option in the settings. I hope this helps.
hi, does the screen show a red rectangle but no text? that’s what happened to me, i just waited a few minutes & the camera turned itself off, started it back up and update was complete, i can tell by checkin the firmware number…
Im very unhappy with Drift HD, I’ve bought HD170 Stealth year ago and picture quality in new HD is way too far from the old device. I did upgrade latest FirmWare to 1.1.42 and at first stage not much difference! – specially on 60FPS. This is second time Drift let me down!! The worst is that I wasn’t aware that I would have to upgrade new camera software (understand after few months at least but not a brand new latest product) and I’ve recorded my whole trip in europe with rubbish quality! All my recordings were in 720 and 60FPS – main problem is withe resolution and light sensor. Horrible! Distributor and manufacture should consider upgrading software BEFORE MAKING MONEY!!!! There is obviously nothing I can do now and Im very upset about it! Im considering returning this to supplier and buying new Go Pro!!

Hi, I have the Stealth, and I recently noticed that the screen randomly goes purple and becomes all distorted, and then returns to normal. This has happened twice, and it shows up in the recorded video. The second time it happened, the picture remained distorted, but the colours were back to normal. Would a firmware update solve this, or is there something wrong with the lens?

We have recently been made aware of this firmware based problem, affecting the Drift HD only when set to 720p 50fps. Fortunately there is a quick fix.
You can carry out a master reset of your camera by pressing and holding all four buttons simultaneously, until you see the live preview. As you press and hold the buttons you should see the screen flicker, and the camera should power on without showing the “get out there” boot screen.
It can take a few goes to get the master reset procedure right, so please try three or four times.
After the master reset, your camera should work as normal in all frame rates aside from 50fps, but if not, please don’t hesitate to email info@driftinnovation.com and we’ll be able to assist you further.

I purchased a Drift HD and it worked fine with the DriftHD external mic. After I installed the latest firmware the external mic stopped working all together. I exchanged the Drift HD for a new one thinking it was defective. The new one worked great until I installed the firmware. After the update, the external mic no longer worked. I’m thinking of returning and going with a different camera with less problems. Can I roll back the update to get the external mic working again?

We have recently been made aware that firmware version 1.1.42 can cause the problem you have described, and have developed a fix accordingly.

Do I have to update the FW in order of the realeased Updates (where are the old FW updates) or do I have to install the latest version of FW?

I’ve had the HD1080p for about a month now, just the other day after shooting a ride i notice that the recording was way out of vocus but the day before was working just fine, you think the new firmware would take care of this problem on the HD1080p or do i need to send it back for replacement.
By the way firmware on this cam is 1.1.21

Bought my Drift hd 1070 stealth barely 6mos ago, figured I would maybe switch from my always reliable Gopro just to try a different product. Used my Drift cam twice. now it will not even turn on. Did some checking around on the web in regards to what may be the problem and most the information I found pointed me in the direction of a faulty battery. Apparently if unused and uncharged for an extended period of time it goes kaput. Went back to the dealer where i purchased the cam, explained the circumstances, and relayed the results of my research and asked if they carried replacement batteries or if they had any in stock. I was told they would get in touch with the Drift Innovation rep and would have to have my battery replaced under warranty as they did not carry any replacement parts or accessories. Hmmm (what gives…distributor with no product.) Spying a new camera still in the packaging being displayed on the wall I inquired, and was told that was the only drift product in the whole store!?! (what gives….distributor with no product) Well now maybe its just me, but I would see that as a huge problem if I was a manufacturer. You advertise my product yet you carry no stock? Not only does it send a message that perhaps my chosen distributor/retailer is unbelieving of my product but what the hell is my rep ( my guy on the street, the person getting paid to put my product in the hands of the consumer) doing or not doing and am I getting my moneys worth or am i paying to much for his services. That was 4.5 weeks ago. I had been diligently checking back once week. Now my patience is wearing quite thin. No longer comfortable with just sitting around and waiting for things to happen I took it upon myself to try and find a replacement battery.Bingo!! found an extended life battery,( after making one phone call) put it in the camera and nothing…wtf? Before passing judgment and giving way to anger I would charge it then go from there, (6hrs later)…nothing. Blue light comes on indicating the camera is in charging mode as per the manual, however as soon as I press the power button again I am disappointed. Patience exhausted at this point, I research a little more and I find yet another distributor of the Drift product (this one also distributes Gopro) I ask the gent of his opinion, and am told my camera is defective most likely a hardware issue. We proceed to run some obvious tests, plugging the camera into a constant power source such as a computer, next we try a wall charger and still nothing. I have since tested the original battery as well as the new extended life battery that was purchased. The new battery reads 3.7 as expected, the original batter 0. (this was all done in less than a day, replacement battery found, sourced 2 different dealers that not only sell but stock drift cameras AND accessories, troubleshoot my own problem and came up with answers to my questions with the help of informed product specialists).
RECAP: i have been to two other dealers of the same product and have seen with my own eyes ample supply of drift product from batteries/accessories/and the cameras themselves.

confirmed a solution
sourced another 2 actual drift reps
total time….less than one standard work day.
meanwhile…(4.5wks later) I am still waiting to hear back from the original dealer who is waiting to hear back from their supposed Drift Camera rep guy. When can I (customer, consumer, word of mouth advertiser, potential Drift Innovation street marketer) expect to see a replacement battery?

Now that it is confirmed that the product sold to me is defective and will be replaced under warranty as it should be, how long will i have to wait? 4.5 weeks and counting for a battery, I can just imagine the wait time for a camera.
I really hope this lack of service is investigated.
Being a small business owner myself, I would be livid, beside myself with anger if the person/company I paid to represent my product and be the face of my company to the consumer performed and at such a low standard. I doubt such performance could even be called A standard.
What do you suppose that says about your organization? Your product? Your bottom line? I really hope ( doubtful) this can be resolved. So far my experience with your company and product has been found wanting, hopefully this can change. I would like to receive some communication regarding my issues however I am doubtful this will reach very far

Brand new Drift HD- screen worked for a few days, now only 2 black and white strips, have tried the master reset, when charging, blue light shows momentarily then nothing. Should I rather GoPro? Any advice?

Firmware update 1.1.42 was our latest update that we would have announced. Any subsequent updates will also be announced on the website and all our social channels.
I’ve got the HD 1080p and it seems to have the 1.1.42 firmware on, but there is no 60fpm setting as stated in the description. I’ve tried to load the file I’ve downloaded but there is no change.
Please try reloading the firmware – firstly format your SD card and make sure the file is named drift.dat (with no numbers after the file name). If reloading the firmware doesn’t solve your issue please contact customer support on info@driftinnovation.com who will be able to further assist.
I have a Drift170 Stealth. Took it on a ‘ride of a lifetime’ to Nova Scotia. It worked fine for about 15 minutes. I shut it off, and went to turn it back on and, nothing. How depressing. Tried the reset but still nothing.
I even e-mailed info@drift address and, nothing.
For an expensive camera, it breaks easily. No extreme use, no dropping, no rain, just use, and it stops working. Frustrating.

Hi, I have 2 -HD170 (2 months old ) both will not play back on my PC with the USB cord, it plays back in music mosaic screen, they both worked for the first 5 weeks on my PC , they will play back on the camera, both have SanDisk 32gb cards,tried 3 PC, readers, other cards and still no picture, just a music screen appears and the sound will play. can anyone help . thanks Tom
In this case I would suggest emailing our customer support team on info@driftinnovation.com – who will be able to assist you with this issue. It may be in this case that due to two units not working, there may be an issue with the PC, we will need to do some tests to determine the root cause so please drop us an email.
I updated the firmware to 1.1.42 from 1.1.18 and I’m now having mic issues. The low light quality is greatly improved, but the camera no longer detects my external mic.
Actually, I take that back; I was looking at the wrong update. 1.1.18 is the latest for the HD720, not the older HD1080 version.
I went to download the older update but it would seem it’s no longer available. Could you (or anyone reading this) provide a link to the older version?
Which camera model do you have? For the HD the latest available firmware is 1.1.42 and for the HD720 is 1.0.18. Please only use the firmware designed for your camera model as using incorrect firmware can cause significant issues. My brand new Drift HD will not stop recording and will not respond at all, just the red light on, if i take out the battery it will not keep the video i just recorded. I had just updated to the latest firmware when this started happening but i didn’t really use it much before that. First time i’ve used it and i have no useful footage…

just bought a drift hd, and the firmware installed on it is 1.1.46 But according to your site the latest firmware is 1.1.42 I pesume that the firmware already installed is a later version though?
Need some help have two drift 1080 hd cameras that arent working. Very important project going on and neither of them can have thier firmware upgraded. Watched the full demo and followed instructions. Have had ticket out for last 8 hours with no response. ON a deadline. Ouch drift….Ouch.
Firmware 1.1.8 will not upgrade. File from internet will not mount to camera. Two cameras down Frustrated Both camera have a difficult time starting. Both shutting down after start screen.
I’m sorry to hear you’re having problems. Could you confirm you have 2 Drift HD’s? As it potentially sounds as though you are trying to upgrade using the Drift HD720 firmware, which is meant for a separate camera, and therefore will not work, and may in fact cause damage to the cameras, which may be what has happened here. The firmware you require is 1.1.53 for the Drift HD. You have taken the best step by contacting our customer support team who will be able to help you solve this. As we’re based in the UK please allow 24 hours for a response, as the team are only working between 9am and 6pm GMT. I will make sure they’re aware this is an urgent case.
Need Help Please !!! When you plug in to the computer and the blue light turns on this indicates the camera is charging. I would suggest leaving your camera plugged in to charge until this blue light turns off by itself, this will indicate the battery is full. As you have left the camera for 6 months the battery is likely to have leaked charged and be dead so could explain why your camera won’t turn on. Please leave it to fully charge up then try switching on again. If this doesn’t work please contact customer support on info@driftinnovation.com.

I purchased the drift hd 1080p a few days ago from amazon, everything worked fine the first few times on my motorcycle but now everything is out of focus?, the same problem as “victory”. this happened with the recent 1.1.42 firmware installed, today i installed the new 1.1.53 update and the out of focus still remains, this in in video or camera mode. a reset was done and the sd card formatted but the problem still remains. should i try a master reset? when it was working i was very impressed with the quality in both 720p and 1080p.
This is in fact a hardware fault and will mean your camera needs replacing – it only rarely happens so I am sorry to hear this has happened in your case! Record some footage and it seems to be stuck on record – won’t turn off – no footage on sd card – need to remove battery to turn it off – no footage captured – tried to check if different memory card – but same – Can’t update firmware as it keeps “crashing/feeezing” only had this since end of January – how do i stand with a replacement unit as I’d like to take on handgliding holiday in September ?

ok, so I bought the new HD Drift after some bad luck with the Stealth. I am hoping it was a ‘fluke’…The first video I shoot with the HD, the video is choppy.
So, I decided to try and load the firmware. I get all the way to red screen that says, ‘Wait for FW Update’, the the screen goes back to the previous screen that tells me the firmware release number, 1.1.21. No update happened…i hope this fixes the problem. I put both videos side by side (Stealth vs. HD) and the Stealth was so much smoother. anyway, how do I get the firmware to upload. Don’t say to watch the video, I did and it doesn’t work.
My apologies you’re experiencing an issue – I would recommend in this case contacting customer support on info@driftinnovation.com and arranging a call back to walk through the firmware process, there are a number of small issues that could occur such as multiple downloads and numbered files drift.dat(2) which would not be recognised, an unformatted SD etc. the team will be able to determine this and solve it quickly. Playback should be smooth, is it smooth in play on the camera? In some cases computers/laptops that are a bit older can’t cope with the file size of the HD and play back ‘skipping’ as it can’t load quick enough; again the team will be able to discuss this issue with you.
Thanks for getting back to me, i got in touch with the seller and they have said they will replace it with a new unit so my old camera is now on its way to them, i look forward to getting the new one as i’m very pleased with the hd footage this camera takes.
Thanks, the drift.dat(2) was the problem. I loaded the updated firmware and the ‘stuttering’ in the video went away and it is smooth now.
Just when I thought I was fine (tested in in 5 minute short videos), I take a video that is about 40 minutes long. When I took out the SD card it showed two .mov files. 1 about 3.9GB and another about 1.5GB. I did read that if the file size is too big it will separate them.
But, when I try to open either one, it tells me the file could not be opened, it is not a movie file. I am using Quicktime Player 7. aghhh! what is going on with this??! The icon does indicate a movie file and it does have a .mov after the file names. (File001, and File002)
Good stuff we got the firmware sorted. Yes, thats true that the Drift HD will separate files once they reach 3.9GB. I would try using VLC media player first to determine whether the file is playable or corrupt, you can download VLC for free here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html – let me know if this allows the file to be played. Also, if it not showing .mov can I ask what file type is showing?

I appreciate you sending me a vendor for a discount, but I found it less expensive with an extra battery and case through a distributor on E-Bay.

Have two Drift HD cameras and one of them purchased May 2012. One camera works great. The other camera keeps freezing. Also the memory card just pops out with a little bump of the camera. I completed the firmware update today and thought that would solve the issue, but it did not. Also, the get out there screen only pops up once in a while, not every time i start the camera. Please help.
i’ve got the drift 1080p since march, any problem until today, my camera didnt start any more, when i plug this one to my computer a blue light coming, but when i try any thing with, it stop. I also try to reboot the firm ware with the 4 button press but no answer from the camera.
i dont know what i can do, could you please help me,
how i can check my firmware version without starting the camera, the only information i’ve got is the series number on the camera box … my computer still not reconize the camera.
Unfortunately there is no way to check the firmware version installed in your Drift without powering the camera on. Could you please let me know more details about the problem with your camera?
this is the problem, one day it was working, and the next one, the camera didnt powering any more. i tryed to reboot with the 4 button but nothing, same thing when i plug this one at the computer, nothing comming…

My new replacement camera has arrived, latest firmware installed and works perfectly.Just one question, has the packaging changed?. my old camera’s packaging was a cardboard box, with foam inside and a lid but the new camera has come in a really nice designed plastic box, for perfect storage. I take it this camera is a later batch as it also had later firmware already installed.

Hi Greg, yes you can! If you save the file directly to the SD card (it’s helpful to format the card first) and then update the firmware in this way. If you are still having issues after trying to update your firmware in this way then please contact customer support on info@driftinnovation.com.

My screen boots to video – with no live preview. The settings button does not work, nor do the other buttons – i tried a master reset and nothing happens – i uploaded the latest firmware update and nothing happens – ive had it for a couple months and used very little. It has stayed dry as I just use it for mtb – and no crashes…very upset right now.

I bought a Stealth a year ago (registered) and had no problems with it (used on motorcycle for taking 99% still photos). My only disappointment was poor resolution at 5MP and was happy when you told me a new 8MP model was coming out soon.
I let the new HD with 9MP work out some bugs and bought one last month (registered) and get the same 5MP resolution – both in STL and ACT mode. Firmware is 1.1.32 out of the box, but am wary about updating due to severe issues with 1.1.42 and and 1.1.53 being so new (and description does not address resolution issues).
In fact, I haven’t read anywhere online/your site about not getting 9MP resolution. All pics on Stealth and HD are 72dpi, yet a Canon 8MP pics are 180dpi. Something is obviously wrong here. What do you suggest?

The 9MP is achieved only when using the photo mode with STI (Still camera) setting selected. When ACT (action sports) mode is selected, the camera will take pictures in 5MP only.
In short:
ACT = for action shots (scenes in movement, targeted for sports) with a higher shutter speed and 5MP resolution
STI = for still shots (stable pictures like still landscapes) with a much slower shutter speed and 9MP resolution.
Thanks Olivia – but as mentioned in my post, I am getting low/the same resolution in BOTH modes (both STL and ACT). As I said, I am getting only 72dpi from the HD in either mode (the same resolution I get from the Stealth at 5MP) and all three pictures: HD in STL, HD in ACT and Stealth – look exactly the same. Both the HD (in either mode) and Stealth picture resolution is very poor compared to a standard 8MP digital camera.
In short – there is nothing I can do to get 9MP resolution – even though it says 9MP on the LCD screen while in STL mode. There is an obvious problem here. I bought the HD for the sole purpose of getting better quality still photos and that is not happening.
I can attach all three photos in an e-mail if you tell me who to send it to – but nowhere in the file Details does it show which mode is used – but trust me, I’ve tried both and verified what it said on the LCD screen.
Just bought the Drift HD 1080p and i have the same problem of Kevin, the camera is out of focus, my questions are:
- the drift hd have an automatic focus? or is fixed? I open the lents box (take out the 4 litle screws) and i can focus manualy but after same shots it came again out of focus. i presume something is wrong.

The Drift HD features automatic focus – with fixed lenses. If your camera is getting out of focus regularly and needs manual adjustment as mentioned, there is something wrong with your unit. I suggest you to contact the shop where you bought it from and claim a replacement under warranty. It’s an easy process and you should face no hassle.

I purchased a couple of MaxFlash “action” memory cards to use with my DriftHD, because they are supposedly “optimized” for helmet cams, and have been tested/approved to work with drift and contour cameras.
But I cannot get the camera to boot when the card is in the unit, have to power on first and then insert the card, otherwise no boot. That is not very practical when out in the field, and I don’t remember this happening prior to updating to the 1.42 firmware. I thought 1.53 might fix it but no…
Have you had any reports from users with those memory cards? is there a fix? thanks.
The Drift HD camera was design to work with any “plain” memory card, from any class ranging from 4 to 10 – so there is no need of expensive high-speed cards or special series.
However, in your case the mentioned Maxflash microSD card should work just fine – we apologise you’re facing issues. Could you please contact us via customerservices@driftinnovation.com informing the serial number of your camera and the class/model of your card?
My video is choppy. Everyone with the camera i know has this problem. We had too get a brand new camera because changing the battery (BRAND NEW) did not work and nothing else worked that i was capable without ripping the camera apart because it wouldnt hold a charge before. We now have the brand new camera, holds charge but still has choppy video!!!!
Hi There! I have been trying to install the latest firmware on my HD170. I have followed the steps in the tutorial (including the reformat of my SD card) and I continue to get a message “Error-No FW Found” the Bin File is there when I connect pack to my PC. Any advice? Please help! Thanks!
Thanks for contacting! Mainly if you’re using Firefox / Chrome / Safari as a web browser, please double check the name of the file you downloaded. If you download the firmware twice – the file-names are usually renamed (1), (2) at the end. For the H170 (orange and black unit), the correct file name should be always “hd170.bin”. Let me know if helped!

I have a Stealth HD170 and has been great for about 9 months but now the colours has gone weird. Anything bright on the screen comes out bright purples, red, green…..it looks like a thermal imaging camera and shows up that way on the recordings to.
I’ve tried resetting it, holding all 4 buttons down, changing all the record settings, everything else works fine, it’s just the colours that have gone funky.
Any ideas?

i have 2 HD170 cameras – the firmware version on them is on one V2.0.31 and the other V2.0.18 – are these the most up to date firmware settings for these please and if not how can i update them
i am also getting trouble for the one 2.0.18 that it stop recording without warning and then saying memory is full when all it has is 40 minutes of 720p
2.0.31 is the latest firmware version for the Stealth, so It’s worth updating the camera that’s running an earlier version. This should help with the issues you’ve mentioned, but if not, please drop us an email at customer services@driftinnovation.com

Delete all old versions of the firmware that may be on your computer and make sure you format your SD card. Then try to do the update again and it should show a message saying “Wait for Firmware” and then it should show 1.1.53. I am getting purple artifacts in my Drift movies as. It seems to be in the whitest/lightest portions of the movie. Is this something wrong with the camera? It has been rarely used. Thanks!
Hi there, the recording angles in 1080p is 170 degrees. In 720p at 50 or 60 frames per second the recording angle is 127 degrees. If you need any more information please email customerservices@driftinnovation.com. Hope this helps!
My Drift HD170 1080p shows the firmware installed in settings as V2.0.18. I followed the video tutorial to load the latest firmware which your web page shows as V1.6.11. Firstly the code seems wrong as the surely V2 is a newer version? When I tried to update the firmware to the stated V1.6.11 I just repeatedly get the no FW found error message. I have tried formatting the SD card and loading the bin file via the SD card in the laptop route and via the USB cable link to camera route but same result. Please advise.

I WAS the Happy owner of a Drift HD 170 until about a month ago. I have owned the Camera for 1 year now , and have used it LESS than the life of one battery{about 4 hours} , I noticed an update for the Firmware , so I updated AS Stated in the Video tutorial , Now I CANNOT record , or Get the Live Preview option anymore. Worst of all I cannot do an update to fix the issue either. I am stumped for a solution , and I will be VERY Angry if I am Told that I have to Pay for a repair of something that I ALREADY paid FULL RETAIL price for. I EXPECT a Resolution to my issue Immediately.
Hi My Drift HD’s screen wont turn on, it comes up with a white and grey lined screen and nothing else, ive tryed the master re-set a few times but know different. Any suggestions? Only used camera about 10 times last summer

yesterday evening I was uptdating my H.D 1080 P firmware to V 1.1.53 and leave
it a few minutes on the computer table.
When I came back camera was off and no way to turn it on again, even master
reset dont work. Battery was full (no blue light when pluging camera on computer) !
I plug it on USB power without battery and micro sd card as said on your troubleshooter : always no start.
Just bot a HD720 – does it need a SD card installed before the battery will charge?
After reading all the above problems, I’m temped to send it back to BestBuy before I have problems too – comments?

I have just received a Drift HD1080 for Christmas.
The unit will not charge.
I have installed the battery correctly.
When either connecting it to a PC via a USB port or external power supply, the blue charging light blinks momentarily, however, does not stay on. Even leaving it plugged in there is no indication that it is charging.
The unit will not switch on under battery power. However it switches on and appears to operate normally when connected to an external power source or the PC.
To say I am disappointed is an understatement.
Any suggestions as to what the issue may be?
Having read all the issues highlighted on this site, I am now considering just returning the item to Amazon and going for the GoPro
Hi I have just bought my son the drift hd 1080 for Christmas and it would appear that the battery is dead , no blue light shows when charging and we cannot get it to work unless plugged into a pc via USB, can you advise if its a firmware issue or just a fault please
Brand new HD camera will not charge the battery; tried two batteries, two cables and multiple PC and non-PC USB outlets. Camera work fine, but just won’t charge…therefore pretty useless really. This is an out-of-box failure and the camera has never been used otherwise.
Many people have problems with hd ghost 1080p to charge the battery for the first time.
I had the same problem with Mark December 29th 2012(two batteries, two cables and multiple PC…)

i got the hd 720p drift cam for xmas from my mom in law. i bought a 16g micro sd card for it and it still reads card error. what is wrong with it or what do i need to do.

Bought a non HD Drift for going away, Its just the normal Drift x170. How can i do an update, ive tried to copy the file from your website to a Sd card then update. The file type is .elf compared to the other camera firmwares which are .bin.
I have had my HD 170 for about two years but have only used it for two weeks, When I turned it on today and tried to record a red box flashes up with no SD card. There is a symbol in the bottom right corner of a memory card with a cross through it. I checked the card in my PC and it works fine, I also tested it with four other cards that I have, same problem.
I have done the factory reset, fully chaged the battery but it is still the same. also I redownloaded the latest firmware update but when I try to install it ,it just comes up with update failed, I also tryed to format the card in the camera and it says card error.
The camera hasn’t been dropped or mistreated in any way ,it has been in my bedroom draw since the last time I used it in march 2012.
Have I missed something ?

Our camera is brand new. As instructed, I charged it for two hours. it will power on ONLY when plugged in. Id I disconnect the cable, it will not power on. What’s the problem?
Just bought a new Drift HD Ghost and it won’t record for more than 35 seconds before stopping itself, The remote flashes red and then after any time between 10 seconds and 5 minutes the camera will make a two tone double bleep type noise and then the remote goes back to green, Without any input from myself!!! So aggravating as I missed an accident involving my girlfriend and I have the camera behind her. Now we have a potentially multi year claim and no footage from our only source of hard proof. NOT HAPPY. Tried updating the firmware recently but it has been saying ‘Firmware upgrade in progress’ now for over 3 hours and the battery is sure to die soon. can’t plug it into anything as that stops the update process. USELESS WASTE OF MONEY!

bought a new drift hd 720 as i have an older 170 and thought i’d treat myself, it will not charge, it only powers up when connected via the usb lead, we took it back to the store and tried 2 others, they were both the same, we have to leave with one to try again at home as we didn’t take our credit card to get a refund, very dissapointed and frustrated, really wanted another drift rather than going the go-pro route

After a few short test runs with my HD720 to sort out mounting positions (motorcycle) and some decent weather i did some filming on 17/2/13 and then the battery ran out. I had left my spare (genuine drift) at home so had to wait to review the recordings at home. They play on the camera LCD. When i try to charge the flat battery via USB (computer or mains charger) nothing happens, no blue light, nothing!!! So i connect USB to laptop to try and review the 18 short videos but the laptop doesn’t even SEE the camera!!! So i take out the micro SD and put it into a full size SD carrier and try again, message is “you need to format the card”. So i go and buy a brand new Carrier Card and try that…..same again!!! My status now is 1, I cannot charge my batteries. 2, I cannot connect to my laptop to review or copy my footage. 3, I cannot transfer my files by removing the MicroSD and inserting it into a PC. Lets hope the customer support is better than the product!!!
I bought a Drift 720 HD last month for my son. We inserted the battery and plugged it in to charge. The blue light blinked once and would not charge at all. We tried several times and it still would not charge. Finally we exchanged it for another one and it charged just fine.
I bought myself another drift 720HD for myself, unpacked it, inserted the battery and went to charge it, one fast blue light blink and thats it, this one wont charge either…..what are the chances? Getting really frustrated now having 2 cameras not charge right out of the box. Any ideas or is this simply a quality control issue?
What is the latest version firmware for the HD170? The download page says it’s 1.6.11 but the camera has V2.0.15 on it. I also saw in the comments that there’s a 2.0.31 – Where do I get that? It’s not listed as an option on the download page for HD170
I’ve purchased 2 different model Drift Cameras and would probably not purchase another. Have had various problems with both. HD170 worked fine a couple of times but then Won’t start up . Powers on and flicks but nothing.

I recieved my drift hd 720 about a week ago and since then it hasnt charged one bit. It does none of the things its supposed to. when i plug into my wall adapter it doesnt show a blue light and when i turn it on it starts up fine if its pluged in… after holding down the record button for 3 seconds it shuts off and the blue led flashes and imediatly goes off.
Hi, my Drift HD 170 1080p must have turned off while I was recording and didn’t finalize the video so I can’t play it, view it, convert it or anything of the matter. I’ve tried VLC, quicktime, wmv, streamclip.. Need help, this video was important.
I just updated all three of my HD cameras to 1.1.53 and am now finding that when I use them in iphoto and imovie there are problems. In Iphoto there are no thumbnails for the mov file and in imovie they just do not work. After days on the phone with apple i have come to find that it is an issue with the upgrade. Can I down grade to the update before. Anyways my last trip and videos I can not use until this is resolved.

Just bought a Drift Ghost a month or two ago and have tried using time lapse multiple times with the same problem occuring. The camera starts shooting the time lapse normally, then at some point (without me doing anything) stops taking pictues and freezes up. The camera stays powered and the buttons won’t work to shut the camera down or change modes. I end up having to take the battery out to use the camera again. It’s done this everytime I’ve used timelapse and the amount of pics I get in before this happens varries from 150-700. Everything eles seems to work great, but this is VERY disapointing because of the cost of the item and I purchased it just to use timelapse! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hello, I have trouble focusing with my drift hd 1080, I often happens that the video is recorded out of focus (camera mounted directly on my motorcycle).
Ok I just bought the drift 720hd and I am not happy . I took the 32gig SD mini chip from my phone and put in my drift and the drift deleted all my pictures,videos and contacts. And now it won’t turn on . Press the power button and the green light comes on the “get out there” shows. Then I get a blank screen with the green light still on. This is so not cool no biggie I lost my pics and vids but now this drift won’t turn on. Time to bring this shit back and get me another MIDLAND camera !!

I followed instruction from install firmware video tutorial. Downloaded the file, when i transfer the file with my mac to the SD and try to upload it the system keeps to kick me off saying The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off.
I too have the camera freezing issue. This weekend it froze twice, at around 2.7Gb of recording, and wouldn’t stop or turn off without taking the battery out, resulting in both files being corrupted, 2 hours of great motorcycling footage lost. It wasn’t temperature related either as it was 15′C. I’ve also found the HD720 copes better in LL mode, even in bright sunlight, it seems to struggle in SUN mode.
I’m truely disapointed with this camera, already had a replacement curved shoe mount because the original was a loose fit, as is the replacement, the roll bar shoe mount is also a loose fit.both causing a lot of vibration noise and wobbly video. The only good fitting mount is the flat shoe, that I’ve now stuck to the roll bar mount. I’ve also had the clip replaced because 1 arm snapped off after about 10 uses. I’m fed up with contacting support, I know they won’t have a solution for the camera freezing or there’d be a firmware update. If I hadn’t invested so much money in extras, mounts, charger, batteries, lens covers etc., I’d return it and buy something else.

I’ve been trying to upgrade the firmware of my HD GHOST during at least ten hours and the display shows “Firmware Upgrade in Progress”, during ten hours?!?!?!?!
I’m afraid to break the battery.

It’s work fine until last week
Now I’ve find a problem with focus in case of low light (for example during the end of the day, with sun at the horizont). All the images are completly out of focus.This normally occurs if the master focus is set with a day light.in fact the images record during the day are perfect.When the light coming down the images goes out of focus
The device is mount over a motorcycles, so i can suppose the vibration can move the internal focus regolation.
What can i do to solve the problem? (for example open the camera a set manually the focus in a middle light?).
I know the device is out of warranty, and the opening brake any kind of assistance , but i know send the camera to assistance can be more expensive then to buy a new unit

I purchased a Drift HD last week and have had nothing but issues right from the start and the list of issues keeps growing. Wish I would have seen this blog before I made my purchase. You have a problem with “camera off timer”, or better said I have a problem with the DriftHD firmware 1.1.53. Usualy I set “camera off timer” to 20 minutes, and use the remote control, as it is hard to find and pres the power button while the camera is mounted somewhere out of my sight. Last weekend I found it turned off after just a couple of minutes after I had last used it. It happened 2 times. Today I made a test: set it to turn off after 1minute, I used the remote to start/stop recording every 30 seconds (START…30s…STOP…30s…START…). After 2 minutes just before pressing the Record button on the remote it powered off. While using the record buttom on the camera no “premature” power off ocured during 4 minutes of Start/Stop recording every 30sec. It turned off 1 minute after the last pressed button.
Ok so I have a drift and its really grainy and there are a ton of lines going arcoss the screen. It also shows up when I view them on my computer. Any ideas on how to fix this or is it a lost cause. So far pretty disapointed with the camera.
So I cant download the firmware keeps taking me to a page saying cant be found. Also my camera which is a hd720 that I just bought yesterday refuses to charge… Im really pretty upset with drift and the more I research the more people i notice have been sold broken equipment which is completely unacceptable

Prior to updating you need to make sure you have formatted your memory card and then ensure the firmware is saved on your memory card with the correct file name, for the Ghost it is HD_Ghost.bin

Im very unhappy with Drift HD, I’ve bought HD170 Stealth year ago and picture quality in new HD is way too far from the old device. I did upgrade latest FirmWare to 1.1.42 and at first stage not much difference! – specially on 60FPS. This is second time Drift let me down!! The worst is that I wasn’t aware that I would have to upgrade new camera software (understand after few months at least but not a brand new latest product) and I’ve recorded my whole trip in europe with rubbish quality! All my recordings were in 720 and 60FPS – main problem is withe resolution and light sensor. Horrible! Distributor and manufacture should consider upgrading software BEFORE MAKING MONEY!!!! There is obviously nothing I can do now and Im very upset about it! Im considering returning this to supplier and buying new Go Pro!!

Hi, I have the Stealth, and I recently noticed that the screen randomly goes purple and becomes all distorted, and then returns to normal. This has happened twice, and it shows up in the recorded video. The second time it happened, the picture remained distorted, but the colours were back to normal. Would a firmware update solve this, or is there something wrong with the lens?

We have recently been made aware of this firmware based problem, affecting the Drift HD only when set to 720p 50fps. Fortunately there is a quick fix.
You can carry out a master reset of your camera by pressing and holding all four buttons simultaneously, until you see the live preview. As you press and hold the buttons you should see the screen flicker, and the camera should power on without showing the “get out there” boot screen.
It can take a few goes to get the master reset procedure right, so please try three or four times.

Aplique el master reset, persionando los 4 botones a la vez, metí el nuevo firmware y de momento todo funciona correctamente.

I purchased a Drift HD and it worked fine with the DriftHD external mic. After I installed the latest firmware the external mic stopped working all together. I exchanged the Drift HD for a new one thinking it was defective. The new one worked great until I installed the firmware. After the update, the external mic no longer worked. I’m thinking of returning and going with a different camera with less problems. Can I roll back the update to get the external mic working again?

I’m just still waiting for a new cam from my dealer, cause I had problems after updating on the new FW 1.1.42 (Adam is informed).
When I get the new one:
Do I have to update the FW in order of the realeased Updates (where are the old FW updates) or do I have to install the latest version of FW?

I’ve had the HD1080p for about a month now, just the other day after shooting a ride i notice that the recording was way out of vocus but the day before was working just fine, you think the new firmware would take care of this problem on the HD1080p or do i need to send it back for replacement.

Bought my Drift hd 1070 stealth barely 6mos ago, figured I would maybe switch from my always reliable Gopro just to try a different product. Used my Drift cam twice. now it will not even turn on. Did some checking around on the web in regards to what may be the problem and most the information I found pointed me in the direction of a faulty battery. Apparently if unused and uncharged for an extended period of time it goes kaput. Went back to the dealer where i purchased the cam, explained the circumstances, and relayed the results of my research and asked if they carried replacement batteries or if they had any in stock. I was told they would get in touch with the Drift Innovation rep and would have to have my battery replaced under warranty as they did not carry any replacement parts or accessories. Hmmm (what gives…distributor with no product.) Spying a new camera still in the packaging being displayed on the wall I inquired, and was told that was the only drift product in the whole store!?! (what gives….distributor with no product) Well now maybe its just me, but I would see that as a huge problem if I was a manufacturer. You advertise my product yet you carry no stock? Not only does it send a message that perhaps my chosen distributor/retailer is unbelieving of my product but what the hell is my rep ( my guy on the street, the person getting paid to put my product in the hands of the consumer) doing or not doing and am I getting my moneys worth or am i paying to much for his services. That was 4.5 weeks ago. I had been diligently checking back once week. Now my patience is wearing quite thin. No longer comfortable with just sitting around and waiting for things to happen I took it upon myself to try and find a replacement battery.Bingo!! found an extended life battery,( after making one phone call) put it in the camera and nothing…wtf? Before passing judgment and giving way to anger I would charge it then go from there, (6hrs later)…nothing. Blue light comes on indicating the camera is in charging mode as per the manual, however as soon as I press the power button again I am disappointed. Patience exhausted at this point, I research a little more and I find yet another distributor of the Drift product (this one also distributes Gopro) I ask the gent of his opinion, and am told my camera is defective most likely a hardware issue. We proceed to run some obvious tests, plugging the camera into a constant power source such as a computer, next we try a wall charger and still nothing. I have since tested the original battery as well as the new extended life battery that was purchased. The new battery reads 3.7 as expected, the original batter 0. (this was all done in less than a day, replacement battery found, sourced 2 different dealers that not only sell but stock drift cameras AND accessories, troubleshoot my own problem and came up with answers to my questions with the help of informed product specialists).
RECAP: i have been to two other dealers of the same product and have seen with my own eyes ample supply of drift product from batteries/accessories/and the cameras themselves.

sourced another 2 actual drift reps
total time….less than one standard work day.
meanwhile…(4.5wks later) I am still waiting to hear back from the original dealer who is waiting to hear back from their supposed Drift Camera rep guy. When can I (customer, consumer, word of mouth advertiser, potential Drift Innovation street marketer) expect to see a replacement battery?
ANYONE SEE A PROBLEM HERE?!?! ANYONE!?!
Now that it is confirmed that the product sold to me is defective and will be replaced under warranty as it should be, how long will i have to wait? 4.5 weeks and counting for a battery, I can just imagine the wait time for a camera.
I really hope this lack of service is investigated.
Being a small business owner myself, I would be livid, beside myself with anger if the person/company I paid to represent my product and be the face of my company to the consumer performed and at such a low standard. I doubt such performance could even be called A standard.
What do you suppose that says about your organization? Your product? Your bottom line? I really hope ( doubtful) this can be resolved. So far my experience with your company and product has been found wanting, hopefully this can change. I would like to receive some communication regarding my issues however I am doubtful this will reach very far

I have a Drift170 Stealth. Took it on a ‘ride of a lifetime’ to Nova Scotia. It worked fine for about 15 minutes. I shut it off, and went to turn it back on and, nothing. How depressing. Tried the reset but still nothing.
I even e-mailed info@drift address and, nothing.
For an expensive camera, it breaks easily. No extreme use, no dropping, no rain, just use, and it stops working. Frustrating.

Actually, I take that back; I was looking at the wrong update. 1.1.18 is the latest for the HD720, not the older HD1080 version.

Which camera model do you have? For the HD the latest available firmware is 1.1.42 and for the HD720 is 1.0.18. Please only use the firmware designed for your camera model as using incorrect firmware can cause significant issues. Need some help have two drift 1080 hd cameras that arent working. Very important project going on and neither of them can have thier firmware upgraded. Watched the full demo and followed instructions. Have had ticket out for last 8 hours with no response. ON a deadline. Ouch drift….Ouch.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having problems. Could you confirm you have 2 Drift HD’s? As it potentially sounds as though you are trying to upgrade using the Drift HD720 firmware, which is meant for a separate camera, and therefore will not work, and may in fact cause damage to the cameras, which may be what has happened here. The firmware you require is 1.1.53 for the Drift HD. You have taken the best step by contacting our customer support team who will be able to help you solve this. As we’re based in the UK please allow 24 hours for a response, as the team are only working between 9am and 6pm GMT. I will make sure they’re aware this is an urgent case.

When you plug in to the computer and the blue light turns on this indicates the camera is charging. I would suggest leaving your camera plugged in to charge until this blue light turns off by itself, this will indicate the battery is full. As you have left the camera for 6 months the battery is likely to have leaked charged and be dead so could explain why your camera won’t turn on. Please leave it to fully charge up then try switching on again. If this doesn’t work please contact customer support on info@driftinnovation.com.

I purchased the drift hd 1080p a few days ago from amazon, everything worked fine the first few times on my motorcycle but now everything is out of focus?, the same problem as “victory”. this happened with the recent 1.1.42 firmware installed, today i installed the new 1.1.53 update and the out of focus still remains, this in in video or camera mode. a reset was done and the sd card formatted but the problem still remains. should i try a master reset? when it was working i was very impressed with the quality in both 720p and 1080p.

ok, so I bought the new HD Drift after some bad luck with the Stealth. I am hoping it was a ‘fluke’…The first video I shoot with the HD, the video is choppy.
So, I decided to try and load the firmware. I get all the way to red screen that says, ‘Wait for FW Update’, the the screen goes back to the previous screen that tells me the firmware release number, 1.1.21. No update happened…i hope this fixes the problem. I put both videos side by side (Stealth vs. HD) and the Stealth was so much smoother. anyway, how do I get the firmware to upload. Don’t say to watch the video, I did and it doesn’t work.

My apologies you’re experiencing an issue – I would recommend in this case contacting customer support on info@driftinnovation.com and arranging a call back to walk through the firmware process, there are a number of small issues that could occur such as multiple downloads and numbered files drift.dat(2) which would not be recognised, an unformatted SD etc. the team will be able to determine this and solve it quickly. Playback should be smooth, is it smooth in play on the camera? In some cases computers/laptops that are a bit older can’t cope with the file size of the HD and play back ‘skipping’ as it can’t load quick enough; again the team will be able to discuss this issue with you.

Thanks, the drift.dat(2) was the problem. I loaded the updated firmware and the ‘stuttering’ in the video went away and it is smooth now.
Just when I thought I was fine (tested in in 5 minute short videos), I take a video that is about 40 minutes long. When I took out the SD card it showed two .mov files. 1 about 3.9GB and another about 1.5GB. I did read that if the file size is too big it will separate them.
But, when I try to open either one, it tells me the file could not be opened, it is not a movie file. I am using Quicktime Player 7. aghhh! what is going on with this??! The icon does indicate a movie file and it does have a .mov after the file names. (File001, and File002)

Good stuff we got the firmware sorted. Yes, thats true that the Drift HD will separate files once they reach 3.9GB. I would try using VLC media player first to determine whether the file is playable or corrupt, you can download VLC for free here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html – let me know if this allows the file to be played. Also, if it not showing .mov can I ask what file type is showing?

Have two Drift HD cameras and one of them purchased May 2012. One camera works great. The other camera keeps freezing. Also the memory card just pops out with a little bump of the camera. I completed the firmware update today and thought that would solve the issue, but it did not. Also, the get out there screen only pops up once in a while, not every time i start the camera. My new replacement camera has arrived, latest firmware installed and works perfectly.Just one question, has the packaging changed?. my old camera’s packaging was a cardboard box, with foam inside and a lid but the new camera has come in a really nice designed plastic box, for perfect storage. I take it this camera is a later batch as it also had later firmware already installed.

I bought a Stealth a year ago (registered) and had no problems with it (used on motorcycle for taking 99% still photos). My only disappointment was poor resolution at 5MP and was happy when you told me a new 8MP model was coming out soon.
I let the new HD with 9MP work out some bugs and bought one last month (registered) and get the same 5MP resolution – both in STL and ACT mode. Firmware is 1.1.32 out of the box, but am wary about updating due to severe issues with 1.1.42 and and 1.1.53 being so new (and description does not address resolution issues).
In fact, I haven’t read anywhere online/your site about not getting 9MP resolution. All pics on Stealth and HD are 72dpi, yet a Canon 8MP pics are 180dpi. Something is obviously wrong here. What do you suggest?

Thanks for your comments.
The 9MP is achieved only when using the photo mode with STI (Still camera) setting selected. When ACT (action sports) mode is selected, the camera will take pictures in 5MP only.
In short:
ACT = for action shots (scenes in movement, targeted for sports) with a higher shutter speed and 5MP resolution
STI = for still shots (stable pictures like still landscapes) with a much slower shutter speed and 9MP resolution.

Thanks Olivia – but as mentioned in my post, I am getting low/the same resolution in BOTH modes (both STL and ACT). As I said, I am getting only 72dpi from the HD in either mode (the same resolution I get from the Stealth at 5MP) and all three pictures: HD in STL, HD in ACT and Stealth – look exactly the same. Both the HD (in either mode) and Stealth picture resolution is very poor compared to a standard 8MP digital camera.
In short – there is nothing I can do to get 9MP resolution – even though it says 9MP on the LCD screen while in STL mode. There is an obvious problem here. I bought the HD for the sole purpose of getting better quality still photos and that is not happening.
I can attach all three photos in an e-mail if you tell me who to send it to – but nowhere in the file Details does it show which mode is used – but trust me, I’ve tried both and verified what it said on the LCD screen.

The Drift HD features automatic focus – with fixed lenses. If your camera is getting out of focus regularly and needs manual adjustment as mentioned, there is something wrong with your unit. I suggest you to contact the shop where you bought it from and claim a replacement under warranty. It’s an easy process and you should face no hassle.

I purchased a couple of MaxFlash “action” memory cards to use with my DriftHD, because they are supposedly “optimized” for helmet cams, and have been tested/approved to work with drift and contour cameras.
But I cannot get the camera to boot when the card is in the unit, have to power on first and then insert the card, otherwise no boot. That is not very practical when out in the field, and I don’t remember this happening prior to updating to the 1.42 firmware. I thought 1.53 might fix it but no…
Have you had any reports from users with those memory cards? is there a fix? thanks.

The Drift HD camera was design to work with any “plain” memory card, from any class ranging from 4 to 10 – so there is no need of expensive high-speed cards or special series.
However, in your case the mentioned Maxflash microSD card should work just fine – we apologise you’re facing issues. Could you please contact us via customerservices@driftinnovation.com informing the serial number of your camera and the class/model of your card?

My video is choppy. Everyone with the camera i know has this problem. We had too get a brand new camera because changing the battery (BRAND NEW) did not work and nothing else worked that i was capable without ripping the camera apart because it wouldnt hold a charge before. We now have the brand new camera, holds charge but still has choppy video!!!!

Thanks for contacting! Mainly if you’re using Firefox / Chrome / Safari as a web browser, please double check the name of the file you downloaded. If you download the firmware twice – the file-names are usually renamed (1), (2) at the end. For the H170 (orange and black unit), the correct file name should be always “hd170.bin”. Let me know if helped!

Hi Mr. Drift,
I have a Stealth HD170 and has been great for about 9 months but now the colours has gone weird. Anything bright on the screen comes out bright purples, red, green…..it looks like a thermal imaging camera and shows up that way on the recordings to.
I’ve tried resetting it, holding all 4 buttons down, changing all the record settings, everything else works fine, it’s just the colours that have gone funky.
Any ideas?

i have 2 HD170 cameras – the firmware version on them is on one V2.0.31 and the other V2.0.18 – are these the most up to date firmware settings for these please and if not how can i update them
i am also getting trouble for the one 2.0.18 that it stop recording without warning and then saying memory is full when all it has is 40 minutes of 720p

Delete all old versions of the firmware that may be on your computer and make sure you format your SD card. Then try to do the update again and it should show a message saying “Wait for Firmware” and then it should show 1.1.53. My Drift HD170 1080p shows the firmware installed in settings as V2.0.18. I followed the video tutorial to load the latest firmware which your web page shows as V1.6.11. Firstly the code seems wrong as the surely V2 is a newer version? When I tried to update the firmware to the stated V1.6.11 I just repeatedly get the no FW found error message. I have tried formatting the SD card and loading the bin file via the SD card in the laptop route and via the USB cable link to camera route but same result. Please advise.

I WAS the Happy owner of a Drift HD 170 until about a month ago. I have owned the Camera for 1 year now , and have used it LESS than the life of one battery{about 4 hours} , I noticed an update for the Firmware , so I updated AS Stated in the Video tutorial , Now I CANNOT record , or Get the Live Preview option anymore. Worst of all I cannot do an update to fix the issue either. I am stumped for a solution , and I will be VERY Angry if I am Told that I have to Pay for a repair of something that I ALREADY paid FULL RETAIL price for. I EXPECT a Resolution to my issue Immediately.

Hello,
yesterday evening I was uptdating my H.D 1080 P firmware to V 1.1.53 and leave
it a few minutes on the computer table.
When I came back camera was off and no way to turn it on again, even master
reset dont work. Battery was full (no blue light when pluging camera on computer) !
I plug it on USB power without battery and micro sd card as said on your troubleshooter : always no start.
Any advice ?

I have just received a Drift HD1080 for Christmas.
The unit will not charge.
I have installed the battery correctly.
When either connecting it to a PC via a USB port or external power supply, the blue charging light blinks momentarily, however, does not stay on. Even leaving it plugged in there is no indication that it is charging.
The unit will not switch on under battery power. However it switches on and appears to operate normally when connected to an external power source or the PC.
To say I am disappointed is an understatement.
Any suggestions as to what the issue may be?
Having read all the issues highlighted on this site, I am now considering just returning the item to Amazon and going for the GoPro

Brand new HD camera will not charge the battery; tried two batteries, two cables and multiple PC and non-PC USB outlets. Camera work fine, but just won’t charge…therefore pretty useless really. This is an out-of-box failure and the camera has never been used otherwise.

I have had my HD 170 for about two years but have only used it for two weeks, When I turned it on today and tried to record a red box flashes up with no SD card. There is a symbol in the bottom right corner of a memory card with a cross through it. I checked the card in my PC and it works fine, I also tested it with four other cards that I have, same problem.
I have done the factory reset, fully chaged the battery but it is still the same. also I redownloaded the latest firmware update but when I try to install it ,it just comes up with update failed, I also tryed to format the card in the camera and it says card error.
The camera hasn’t been dropped or mistreated in any way ,it has been in my bedroom draw since the last time I used it in march 2012.
Have I missed something ?

Just bought a new Drift HD Ghost and it won’t record for more than 35 seconds before stopping itself, The remote flashes red and then after any time between 10 seconds and 5 minutes the camera will make a two tone double bleep type noise and then the remote goes back to green, Without any input from myself!!! So aggravating as I missed an accident involving my girlfriend and I have the camera behind her. Now we have a potentially multi year claim and no footage from our only source of hard proof. NOT HAPPY. Tried updating the firmware recently but it has been saying ‘Firmware upgrade in progress’ now for over 3 hours and the battery is sure to die soon. can’t plug it into anything as that stops the update process. USELESS WASTE OF MONEY!

After a few short test runs with my HD720 to sort out mounting positions (motorcycle) and some decent weather i did some filming on 17/2/13 and then the battery ran out. I had left my spare (genuine drift) at home so had to wait to review the recordings at home. They play on the camera LCD. When i try to charge the flat battery via USB (computer or mains charger) nothing happens, no blue light, nothing!!! So i connect USB to laptop to try and review the 18 short videos but the laptop doesn’t even SEE the camera!!! So i take out the micro SD and put it into a full size SD carrier and try again, message is “you need to format the card”. So i go and buy a brand new Carrier Card and try that…..same again!!! My status now is 1, I cannot charge my batteries. 2, I cannot connect to my laptop to review or copy my footage. 3, I cannot transfer my files by removing the MicroSD and inserting it into a PC. Lets hope the customer support is better than the product!!!

I bought a Drift 720 HD last month for my son. We inserted the battery and plugged it in to charge. The blue light blinked once and would not charge at all. We tried several times and it still would not charge. Finally we exchanged it for another one and it charged just fine.
I bought myself another drift 720HD for myself, unpacked it, inserted the battery and went to charge it, one fast blue light blink and thats it, this one wont charge either…..what are the chances? Getting really frustrated now having 2 cameras not charge right out of the box. Any ideas or is this simply a quality control issue?

I’ve purchased 2 different model Drift Cameras and would probably not purchase another. Have had various problems with both. HD170 worked fine a couple of times but then Won’t start up . Powers on and flicks but nothing.

I recieved my drift hd 720 about a week ago and since then it hasnt charged one bit. It does none of the things its supposed to. when i plug into my wall adapter it doesnt show a blue light and when i turn it on it starts up fine if its pluged in… after holding down the record button for 3 seconds it shuts off and the blue led flashes and imediatly goes off.

I just updated all three of my HD cameras to 1.1.53 and am now finding that when I use them in iphoto and imovie there are problems. In Iphoto there are no thumbnails for the mov file and in imovie they just do not work. After days on the phone with apple i have come to find that it is an issue with the upgrade. Can I down grade to the update before. Anyways my last trip and videos I can not use until this is resolved.

I just bought the Drift HD720 today and exchanged it since I was having problems with the battery not charging (blue indicator does not show up).
I’m wondering about what to do since I cannot find a fix easily with a google search and the best I can think of is the battery being completely dead.
do you mind if you tell me what’s going on? I just placed a order on a new battery on amazon just now.

Hi,
Just bought a Drift Ghost a month or two ago and have tried using time lapse multiple times with the same problem occuring. The camera starts shooting the time lapse normally, then at some point (without me doing anything) stops taking pictues and freezes up. The camera stays powered and the buttons won’t work to shut the camera down or change modes. I end up having to take the battery out to use the camera again. It’s done this everytime I’ve used timelapse and the amount of pics I get in before this happens varries from 150-700. Everything eles seems to work great, but this is VERY disapointing because of the cost of the item and I purchased it just to use timelapse! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Ok I just bought the drift 720hd and I am not happy . I took the 32gig SD mini chip from my phone and put in my drift and the drift deleted all my pictures,videos and contacts. And now it won’t turn on . Press the power button and the green light comes on the “get out there” shows. Then I get a blank screen with the green light still on. This is so not cool no biggie I lost my pics and vids but now this drift won’t turn on. Time to bring this shit back and get me another MIDLAND camera !!

Hi Drift,
My DRIFT HD 1080p will not turn on or charge. In search of a solution to this problem I have read all the comments on this page watched all the video’s available and used all the firmware updates available . It seems that your camera’s are a waste of MONEY and TIME. I am very disappointed in the service & products you provide. I will be expecting a refund.

I followed instruction from install firmware video tutorial. Downloaded the file, when i transfer the file with my mac to the SD and try to upload it the system keeps to kick me off saying The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off.

I too have the camera freezing issue. This weekend it froze twice, at around 2.7Gb of recording, and wouldn’t stop or turn off without taking the battery out, resulting in both files being corrupted, 2 hours of great motorcycling footage lost. It wasn’t temperature related either as it was 15′C. I’ve also found the HD720 copes better in LL mode, even in bright sunlight, it seems to struggle in SUN mode.
I’m truely disapointed with this camera, already had a replacement curved shoe mount because the original was a loose fit, as is the replacement, the roll bar shoe mount is also a loose fit.both causing a lot of vibration noise and wobbly video. The only good fitting mount is the flat shoe, that I’ve now stuck to the roll bar mount. I’ve also had the clip replaced because 1 arm snapped off after about 10 uses. I’m fed up with contacting support, I know they won’t have a solution for the camera freezing or there’d be a firmware update. If I hadn’t invested so much money in extras, mounts, charger, batteries, lens covers etc., I’d return it and buy something else.

I’ve been trying to upgrade the firmware of my HD GHOST during at least ten hours and the display shows “Firmware Upgrade in Progress”, during ten hours?!?!?!?!
I’m afraid to break the battery.
I did exactly what you say, copy and paste the .bin file.
Please help me!

My apologizes for my english
I’m a happy italian customer of HD170 device (buy from a german ebay reseller 2 years ago)
It’s work fine until last week
Now I’ve find a problem with focus in case of low light (for example during the end of the day, with sun at the horizont). All the images are completly out of focus.This normally occurs if the master focus is set with a day light.in fact the images record during the day are perfect.When the light coming down the images goes out of focus
The device is mount over a motorcycles, so i can suppose the vibration can move the internal focus regolation.
What can i do to solve the problem? (for example open the camera a set manually the focus in a middle light?).
I know the device is out of warranty, and the opening brake any kind of assistance , but i know send the camera to assistance can be more expensive then to buy a new unit

Hey Drift Innovation,
Your generic response of “please go to this link and our customer support team will get back to you” is hillarious and getting old. I’ve gone through every post on this blog looking for even the slightest clue to help me resolve my problems and nothing!
I purchased a Drift HD last week and have had nothing but issues right from the start and the list of issues keeps growing. Wish I would have seen this blog before I made my purchase. All I’ve gotton out of your customer support is a ticket # IGT-934-48372 documenting my problem. I’ll give you until the end of today to get back to me with solution or I’m returning the camera. I’ll be darn sure to let everyone that I know looking for a video camera to steer clear of Drift products.

Buongiorno, ho acquistato una Drift HD GOST 1080P pochi giorni or sono.
C’è un problema di rumori di forte vento quando la istallo nella moto, sia con la regolazione sensibilità microfono a 1 che a 3.
Versione Firmware V1.1.4.0
Con la precedente Drift HP 1080P posizionata nello stesso punto, questo problema non c’era.

hola, yo compre una camara drift hd 1080p nueva, le he colocado la tarjeta de memoria y cuando quiero grabar, en pantalla dice card error, le he cambiado varias tarjetas y sigue igual, no reconoce las tarjetas de memoria, que puedo hacer; me podria ayudar?

You have a problem with “camera off timer”, or better said I have a problem with the DriftHD firmware 1.1.53. Usualy I set “camera off timer” to 20 minutes, and use the remote control, as it is hard to find and pres the power button while the camera is mounted somewhere out of my sight. Last weekend I found it turned off after just a couple of minutes after I had last used it. It happened 2 times. Today I made a test: set it to turn off after 1minute, I used the remote to start/stop recording every 30 seconds (START…30s…STOP…30s…START…). After 2 minutes just before pressing the Record button on the remote it powered off. While using the record buttom on the camera no “premature” power off ocured during 4 minutes of Start/Stop recording every 30sec. It turned off 1 minute after the last pressed button.

Ok so I have a drift and its really grainy and there are a ton of lines going arcoss the screen. It also shows up when I view them on my computer. Any ideas on how to fix this or is it a lost cause. So far pretty disapointed with the camera.

So I cant download the firmware keeps taking me to a page saying cant be found. Also my camera which is a hd720 that I just bought yesterday refuses to charge… Im really pretty upset with drift and the more I research the more people i notice have been sold broken equipment which is completely unacceptable

Hi, I have just attempted to update the firmware for the Drift HD Ghost..after following the instructions I now have the message on the screen ‘Firmware update in progress’ it’s been almost 2 hours..is this normal? When should I expect it to be complete? The camera is also very warm..

Hi Russell,
Prior to updating you need to make sure you have formatted your memory card and then ensure the firmware is saved on your memory card with the correct file name, for the Ghost it is HD_Ghost.bin
